Uses: Long living medium tree mostly planted as orchard plant for its nuts. Can be grown in larger gardens for shade.

Does not tolerate shade. Needs full sun but not high summer temperatures. Grows best is deep well drained soil. For areas were the soil is wetter J.niger is often used as rootstock. Both the Walnut (J. regia) and the Black Walnut (J.nigra) produce a alleopathic toxin called juglone which can be lethal to other plants.
